Merrill Homeschool Week-in-Review {#ParentTeacherMeetUp Week 4}

Monday, October 5

Before I wrap up our week, can I just say (yet again) how much I love our library? As I sat down to start this post, I forgot that I had books to pick up and had to run out quick before they closed for the day. I love being able to reserve books for unit studies on the library website and then just stop at the drive-thru window to grab them! Although most days, like today, I still end up going in to restock our library cart. It amazes me to read that there are so many kids who don't read or get read to every day. We go through at least 20 books a week just for Aiden, and that is not including the books we use for school. I love that Aiden loves books. I also love logging in to my account and seeing:

"In 2015, you have saved $5087.00 by borrowing from the library rather than buying!"

Libraries are awesome.

Anyhow, now on to a look at our week!

What was your best teaching moment this week? I was sick for part of this week, so I am having a hard time thinking of a best moment. We went to the Fire Department open house this weekend, though, which was probably the best part of our week. (You can read more of the happy parts of the past week here.)

What was your biggest struggle?
I know I am a broken record, always saying that I can't find our rhythm. I guess we also struggled more this week with just a general lack of cooperation when it came to certain school work. And yet... I feel like my being so distracted by other things was also partly mostly to blame for that. Which brings us back to things being too busy and not being able to find a rhythm. *sigh* Something has to change.

Were there any milestones met or special accomplishments this week?
Aiden likes to write his own books on Reading Eggs and this week he wrote one with lots of full sentences that (mostly) made sense. I know that may not seem like a big milestone, but he has been doing these stories that were just words that didn't entirely go together for months, so it is noticeable progress.

What resources did you use this week that were awesome?
I had kind of forgotten about the Draw Write Now book I had ordered when I got our curriculum for the year. Aiden enjoyed learning to draw a pig, and his finished picture was darling.

Best kid quote of the week (because you know they say some funny stuff):
I am still bad at recording these things. We still are regularly amused by Aiden's growing vocabulary, and he still tends to find a new word and then use it constantly. Recently it was the word "typically" which he of course mispronounces in a cute way (tic-a-plee) and throws into sentences all the time now.

Kid's choice: Share their favorite parts of the week from their perspective.
Aiden says his favorite thing this week was math. I asked him why and he said "Because it is fun learning numbers." To which my husband replied, "Just like your mama." :)

Hopes for the week ahead.
My hope this week is to get back to a full school week. We have kind of kept it to math and reading with the science and history mixed in through library books, but I really want to start doing more than just the basics again.

  8. It's fantastic when you have a community library that encourages people to go. I've been blessed to have one as well - one that realizes it's not just a place to get books (which is fantastic on its own), but also is a community center... with arts & crafts programs, movies, and basic community education resources about government, family care, etc.

And yes - that whole saving money thing, yet having all the books we could ever read. It's a wonderful thing, isn't it?

    Happy reading,

  9. Woah! Did the kids get to see a live burn?! So cool! We moved a year ago (and I had a baby) and stuff was CRAZY! I need to find our nearest local library and see what all they offer! I forgot how much I loved our old one!

  11. Wow, how sweet is it to pick the books at the drive through! I always have to unbuckle three kids to run into a library for three minutes to grab the reserved books, then spend fifteen minutes trying to get everyone buckled in. Sounds like fire station was a fun experience.
